Poor Old Michael Finnigan, Begin Again

I'm back at school. Dad and I got in about 10:30 Saturday morning. We had some brunch then spent the afternoon at AMNH. We spent a good bit of time at the human origins exhibit, which is fun. They just renovated that exhibit, and while I think it's pretty good, it's not great. There are a few things that I've learned in my anthro classes that I think deserve to be mentioned, but aren't.

The shell beads found at Blombos Cave, for example. Huge deal. 75,000 year old beads mean that humans were decorating themselves 75,000 years ago. These beads mean that humans were thinking symbolically thousands and thousands of years ago. Or the Hobit from Indonesia. They mention that the discovery is controversial, but not why. Tiny brain + fairly advanced tools = way way cool. There's not a lot on burials, which I think is fascinating.

And, while this is fairly minor, there's no dead man of Lascaux. Bummer.

Today, the roommate and I watched six full hours of West Wing, and then I went out and had a snowball fight with some friends. A good day.
